The V M Salgaocar College of Law has initiated a plan to start a unique project titled "V M Salgaocar College of Law Project on Mediation in Family Law", which has been conceptualized as a means to explore, study and develop novel means of resolving disputes by Alternative Dispute Resolution, primarily Mediation in the field of family Law, in cases involving Divorce and Custody of children.

This would be done with due consideration to the fact that these cases involve a significant psychological and personal element. Also, a very important aspect of such disputes is the interest of the parties, the interest of the family, primarily children and also societal interest.

The program would also explore the possibility of designing and suggesting a pilot project on court referred mediation in the aforesaid cases, wherein the court may ask the parties to go for an introductory mediation session, before a team of two mediators, one of them being a Legal professional and the other a Psychologist. The parties may then decide to opt for mediation to settle the dispute if they are satisfied with the introductory session.
