LAW FESTIVAL 2002

Law Fest 2002, is the first ever all India festival of law students to be organized by V.M. Salgaocar College of Law, Miramar-Goa, in the New Millennium. The Fest, was spread over a period of 5 days, and included a combination of interesting competitions, besides the annual 4th V .M. Salgaocar Memorial Moot Court Competition, like Law Quiz, Battlefront, Crossword and Legalese.

A Report

In spite, of being the first of its kind, the host college received an enthusiastic response from different colleges out of which only 16 qualified to compete. The fest begun on the 9th of January with registration and the orientation programme, but actually kicked off to a start on the 10th, after it was inaugurated by the Hon'ble Minister for Law, Adv. Ramakant Khalap in presence of eminent industrialists Mr. Shivanand Salgaocar and Mr. Dattaraj Salgaocar, the President and Vice-President, respectively, of The Devi Sharvani Educational Society.


Battlefront

Immediately after this, the fest begun with its first programme, Battlefront, in which one representative of each team was given a topic on the spot and had to debate on the same for and against, all within the allotted time of 5 minutes. After an exciting display of fine oratory skills and tough competition, Shubodeep Shome of National Law School of India University, Bangalore emerged as winner.


Crossword

This was followed by Crossword, a jumbo crossword based on legal diction and phraseology, with a time limit of 45 minutes, and the team that hit the jackpot was National Academy of Legal Studies and Research, Hyderabad represented by Neela Badarni.


Legalese

Next in tow for the day was Legalese, which was basically a drafting and Conveyancing competition, where maximum 2 members could participate, out of the 2 problems given, one was to be submitted before the event and the other was to be completed on the Spur of the moment. Vasudha Thiagarajan and Bobby Jacob of Dr. Ambedkar Government Law College, Chennai, walked off as the proud winners.


Law Quiz

The entire of day 2, the 11th Jan was taken up by the Law Quiz, the First ever law quiz to be organized at a national level, complete with Computer aided audio-visual effects and the like. The quiz begun in four preliminary rounds with rounds like general round, specific area, visual round, buzzer round and the rapid fire round. The winner and runners-up of each round qualified to the semis and after a tough fight the finalists were picked up. Among the finalists the 2 1ucky teams that walked away with the winning and runners- up trophies were none other than S.D.M. Law College, Mangalore represented by Vivek G. Kurien and Manjunath M.B. and Calcutta University (Law Dept) represented by Bishwaroop Chakraborty and Arijit Bardhan.


4th V.M. Salgaocar Memorial Moot Court Competition

The 4th V.M. Salgaocar Memorial Moot Court Competition as scheduled was held on the 12th Jan, the last day of the Law Fest. All the teams were divided into 4 main groups out of which the team with the highest averages qualified to the semis and ultimately to the finals. After a tough fight and talented show of advocacy skills, National Law School of India University, Bangalore, represented by Arun Prabhu, Shubodeep Shome and Pradeep Nayak emerged Runners-up, while Indian Law Societies Law College, Pune, represented by Chinmoy Sharma, Ravi Prakash Sharma and Pragya Baghel won the most coveted 4th V .M. Salgaocar Memorial Moot Court trophy. The Best Advocate award was bagged by Bishwaroop Chakraborty of Calcutta University (Law Department) and the Best Memorial award went to Dr. Ambedkar Government Law College, Chennai. Vasudha Thiagarajan of Dr. Ambedkar Government Law College, Chennai also won the Best Researcher award.


Grand Slam Trophy


The first ever Grand Slam Gold Trophy, a gold plated trophy sponsored by Lawinc Delhi, for overall championship, based on an average of all the events of the Law Fest 2002 went to Indian Law Societies Law College, Pune. The winning team also received a cash prize at the hands of Hon'ble Justice Aguiar, Hon'ble Justice Hardas and Mr. Dattaraj Salgaocar. Noted Supreme Court lawyer and representative of Law Inc Delhi, Adv. S. Gupta himself, also presented the Lawinc CD to the winners. Besides the winning team S.D.M. Law College, Mangalore came 2nd, National Law School of India University, Bangalore stood 3rd and Calcutta University (Law Department) stood 4th.
