Prison administration in India is always remained a base of contention between jail administration and civil rights activists. There have been many situations in the recent past and even earlier, where not only under trails but even those who completed their sentence continued to languish in Indian jails.
The judiciary has taken note of a matter in this line. The Mumbai High Court has issued directions to evoke services of law students to ascertain the conditions of inmates in the jail. Pursuant to it, the District Legal Service Authorities in association with the students and the faculty of the Law College conduct jail visits to assist the inmates of jail and judicial lock up. The college has taken initiative to gather a group of students of final year Law degree who are required to visit the jails in Goa and interact with the inmates, to ascertain that their rights are not violated, and wherever they have a right to legal remedy, the same is provided promptly. The purpose behind these visits is to provide necessary legal assistance to the inmates. A continuous well planned visit and study of the legal status of each inmate has become part and parcel of legal education at the college.
