ADR Board

V.M. Salgaocar College of Law is pioneer in many aspects. It has also pioneered in imparting legal education in a practical manner. The college emphasizes on learning by doing. This ADR Board is constituted towards achieving same objective.

The ADR Board consists of students who have participated/participating in Client Counseling or Negotiation competitions. These programs provide participating students with a forum to develop important skills that they will use as practitioners, as well as a chance to meet and network with fellow law students and attorneys. The Board organizes selection rounds and prepare panel of students to compete each year in national/international competitions.

The ADR Board emphasizes the importance of preventative law and the need to be an effective counselor in the law office. The Board harnesses the student’s ability to deal with client’s non-legal goals as well as their legal concerns. The goal of the Board is to make students understand the importance of counseling so that they will be hired by the client, but at the same time not give any false hope, violate any ethical duties of an attorney, or give inaccurate advice.

The Negotiation is a new area where advocates are playing major role. Lawyers can be a very good negotiator by the fact that they have complete knowledge of the law and they can be good drafters of settlement agreement. This Board emphasizes on the importance of negotiation in resolving disputes and structuring transactions. The board organizes regular activities to understand the importance of the Negotiation.

The Board treats ADR as an interdisciplinary subject. Negotiation is a process where, disciplines like sociology, political science, psychology, culture, gender etc plays an important role. To provide holistic understand of the process the Board emphasizes on interaction with experts from different subjects to understand complex process of negotiation.

Both Client Counseling and Negotiation provide "real-life" experience in the practice of law, in a controlled environment. One of the major benefits is the receipt of direct feedback from the judges from different disciplines who observe Negotiation process.

In addition to training of students to sending them to competitions, the Board organizes National, International and Local interclass Client Counseling and Negotiation Competition.
